About WARC WARC Services Scholar Affiliations to WARC Recent and Upcoming Events at WARC Summer Programs

ACTIVITIES
Outdoor conference at WARCThe Center sponsors international colloquia, research programs, and round tables on published research, lectures and workshops by visiting and local scholars and writers. WARC has administered an annual short-term research fellowship competition for scholars from West Africa to travel to U.S. host universities, assisted US-based scholars conducting research in Senegal and West Africa, sponsored internships for graduate students, and served as the host institution for individual and group projects of US-based students and Faculties. Below is a sampling of recent WARC activity.

Grands Conférences du WARC: Senghor et les Ecrivains Sénégalais: Dialogue d'Outre-Tombe:

Vendredis cinematographiques du WARC: This spring, the West African Research Center (WARC) teamed up with Fulbright Professor Francoise Pfaff of Howard University, noted scholar of African cinema, to organize a series of film screenings. The series features classic African American and African films and will continue this fall.

CREPOS Seminars: The Centre de Recherche sur les Politiques Sociales, headed up by renowned sociologist Momar Coumba Diop, organizes regular seminars at WARC on research methodologies. These seminars are for doctoral students.

RESEARCHERS' MINI-SEMINARS
These seminars, initiated in 2006, designed for the benefit of visiting researchers in order that they may get feedback from established scholars in their fields, are organized by AROA Board members Awa Ba and Ibrahima Seck.

2007 Mini-Seminars
The first 2007 Mini-Seminar was on 'Decentralization in Senegal ", presented by Djibril Gabriel DIOP in January.

2006 Mini-Seminars
WARC Travel Grantee, Youssoufa Issiaka, Universite Abdou Moumouni, Niger, presented the first in WARC's program of Mini Seminars in January. Rachel Sullivan, awardee and PhD candidate from the University of California, Berkeley, presented in March. Peter Apata Olubambi was the third and final grantee to presnt in March.

WARC Fellows
WARC Fellows play an important part in the life of the center, bringing their expertise and energy to the community of scholars that gathers at WARC. This year's WARC Fellows are:

  • Sadio Ba Gning (Sociology)
  • Madina Diallo (Molecular chemistry)
  • Mouhamed El Amine Diop (Geography)

Contemporary Faces of Islam in West Africa: WARA sponsored workshop in collaboration with Professors Ousmane Sene, WARA director and Penda Mbow and Leonardo A. Villalón, Director of the Center for African Studies, University of Florida.

The West African Judicial Colloquium: On January 9-11, 2006, the West African Research Center (WARC) and the International Center for Ethics, Justice and Public Life, Brandeis University (USA), hosted The West African Judicial Colloquium in Dakar, Senegal.
